Tips and Tricks: June

Inspired by an Impressionist

Here’s a new Tips and Tricks video for you to brighten up your day.

This month I am using the theme ‘The Impressionists’ as my starting point, looking at the work of artists from whom so much can be learnt, and I have settled here, inspired by the work of Berthe Morisot. I’m hoping you may have heard of her but if not, she was a contemporary of Manet and Monet, perhaps overlooked as she was a woman but her paintings are beautiful for their atmosphere and colour choices.

The piece I have created is taken from her studies of Aloe plants in Nice in 1889 and I have tried to emulate her use of soft turquoise and yellow to show the subtleties of the plant’s surface. I’ve used Neocolour II crayons for this on Agave paper as it seemed fitting that the subject and the surface had a relationship.

I do hope you enjoy the video and let me know how you have got on with collecting a similar subject, either by commenting below or by tagging @aliboardartist on social media.

Please note that there is no audio for this video, just lovely music for you to enjoy, do feel free to mute it if you would prefer to use your own background sounds when watching.

See you soon, Ali
